ACC Flooring was appointed by a cleanroom design and construction company to install a static dissipative resin flooring solution to a controlled environment area at the University of Leeds.
The client designs and constructs cleanrooms for the Pharmaceutical and Biotech sectors and provides controlled environments across multiple industrial sectors with their client list including Boston Scientific, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Bausch & Lomb, GSK, Novartis, Pfizer, Reckitt Benckiser and Sanofi.
The areas included a ramp and two lobbies. Both areas were mechanically prepared with enclosed diamond grinders with any dust being extracted into the attached vacuum to maintain a clean environment. A coat of Altro Primer epoxy primer was applied to the concrete surfaces. Once cured a static dissipative copper tape grid was installed and connected to earthing points in suitable locations by the client’s electrical contractor.
When installing a static dissipative system every floor area should have at least one earth linkage. It is good practice to install more than one connection as insurance should one be damaged. The number of connections should increase with the area of the floor and connections at each corner should be considered. A multi strand piece of copper wire connected to earth at one end and fanned out across the floor can be used under a cross hatch of copper tape to maximise the contact and connection to the earth linkage.
A coat of Altro Prime static dissipative was then applied and the conductive aggregate fully blinded into the wet primer. On curing, Altro Flow 3mm static dissipative self-levelling epoxy was the applied to complete the installation.
Altro Flow static dissipative system offers a smooth, hygienic, seamless surface. The static build up is prevented by allowing the charge to harmlessly dissipate through the floor at a controlled rate.
Many industrial processes will create stray static electrical charges. In areas where damage to equipment might result from electrostatic accumulation, or prevention of an accumulation generated by the movement or processing of powders and liquids is required, there will be a need static controlled floors.
Altro Flow 3mm static dissipative has been measured in accordance with the test method laid out in BS 2050. The test method is a point to point surface resistance test. Typical test values 5 x 104-2×106 ohms.
Typical areas of usage include: powder production areas, clean rooms, dry storage areas, plant rooms, laboratories, warehouses, control rooms, ICT areas and electronic assembly.
To complete the scope of works the perimeter walls required 2 coats of Altro Coat water-miscible epoxy at 600mm high.
The works programme was completed in a 3 day programme with social distance measures observed at all times during the installation.
