Case Study: Barnsley Ambulance Station Refurbishment

ACC Flooring Ltd was appointed to carry out the workshop resin flooring works to three ambulance station refurbishment projects for Yorkshire Ambulance Service at Menston near Ilkley, Sherburn near Leeds and Hoyland.

The work at Hoyland Ambulance Station had to be planned in two visits to allow other trades to complete their works. The first visit in early March 2019 included work to the Wash Bay area and Rear Garage and the work to the Front Garage being completed during a second visit in early April 2019.

All three areas were mechanically prepared with enclosed diamond grinders prior to the installation of Flowcrete Aqualock OneCoat solvent and water free liquid applied damp proof membrane. This product is a permanent membrane to protect final finishes from moisture related damage for the life of the floor, subject to there being no structural movement or failure of the concrete slab, no severe thermal cycling or exposure at temperatures above 80°C.

The benefit of Aqualock One Coat include excellent adhesion to concretes and screeds, available with screed and floor finish for a single-source construction and allows for early installation of the floor finish with a recommendation that the resin floor finish should be applied with 24 hours of the application of Aqualock OneCoat.

Once the damp proof membrane had been allowed to cure an epoxy scratchcoat was installed to both the Wash Bay and Rear Garage due to the unevenness and condition of the concrete substrate. When installing an epoxy coating we can only follow the natural contours of the substrate, any undulation will be reflected in the finished product.

2 coats of Flowcrete Flowcoat SF41 high performance, solvent free, chemical resistant high build epoxy coating in Goosewing Grey was applied to all areas including a scatter of non-slip aggregate between coats to provide a slip resistant profile. Consequently this method of installation offers a low slip potential of ˃40 PTV in dry conditions.

Flowcoat SF41 benefits from offering a seamless and hygienic finish which is hard wearing, low maintenance and aesthetically attractive in a high gloss finish and is available in a wide range of colours.

The client was delighted with all three projects and with recent additional installations to both Leeds and Huddersfield Ambulance Hubs for William Birch & Sons Ltd; ACC Flooring Ltd has formed a mutually beneficial relationship with Yorkshire Ambulance Service.
