Case Study: Engineered Systems – Bromborough

ACC Flooring were contracted to install polyurethane screed flooring into a Cleanroom environment for a client in the Wirral.

Cleanrooms are essential in industries where contamination can impact product quality or safety.

Resin Flooring is a popular choice for cleanrooms due to it seamless, durable and easy to clean nature, ideal for maintaining a sterile environment when needed, and can withstand heavy foot traffic, equipment movement and potential impacts.

With approximately 353m2 of Pathways to install in the Cleanroom, the existing concrete substrate was mechanically prepared using a floor grinding machine, a Von Arx floor planer and handheld grinders to provide a clean substrate to receive the resin flooring, anchor grooves where then sawcut into the floor to help lock in the polyurethane screed.

Once the areas were prepared Altrocrete 6mm slip resistant variant was trowel applied in Steel Grey to include toeing in to maintain key levels.

Polyurethane Screeds have a high durability, impact abrasion and excellent chemical resistance to a wide range of chemicals making them ideal for Food Processing, Food and Drink Preparation, Breweries, Commercial Kitchens, Chemical and Pharmaceutical Production and Storage Areas, and are also impervious making them hygienic.

Expansion joints where then reinstated where required using a chemically resistant epoxy flexible jointing compound, which accommodate normal thermal and vibration movement whilst providing a sufficient strength to protect joints from damage and erosion, in Steel Grey to blend in with the newly installed floor.

Safety Yellow demarcations lines where then added to either side of the walkways to high light.

The correct surface preparation and installation techniques are crucial for the longevity and performance of resin flooring systems in cleanrooms.

Heavy Duty Polyurethane Screeds have an anticipated lifespan of approx. 10 – 12 years, with a good housekeeping regime in place and a bit of TLC!

Durability and long-life span of a polyurethane screed makes it a cost-effective solution for a cleanroom environment, reducing the need for frequent replacements or repairs.
