Case Study: Food Manufacturer – Scotland

ACC Flooring were first contacted back in September 2023 regarding a project that was in its early stages of discussion by a long standing client but the works were for one of their factories that we had not previously worked at.

Due to a busy production schedule and a few other factors the project was put on hold until April 2025. ACC Flooring Contracts Manager visited site to discuss any changes to the project that and been made and also the programme of works. The works were to be carried out in their food production area and were planned in over two visits to site during normal working weekday hours.

The first visit was to include mechanical preparation of the existing tiled substrate. The tiles were uplifted and removed to a skip provided on site by the client, any existing failed or damaged old polyurethane screed was also removed. A heavy-duty polymer modified sand and cement screed was then installed at a nominal 50mm to include creating falls into the clients existing drainage channel this was then left to cure over the weekend and ready for visit number 2. The benefits of a polymer modified screed are that it can be installed externally as well as internally and can be applied down to a low of 10mm thickness, is water resistant and has a good tensile strength. The most useful benefit is that the polymer additive allows us to install resin systems on top in as little as 3 days, whereas a traditional sand and cement screeds would take weeks to cure, significantly delaying the project for the client.

ACC Flooring then returned to site to complete the installation of the resin flooring system. A heavy-duty polyurethane screed at a nominal 6mm in Red had been chosen by the client for the 90m2 of Flooring area.

Heavy duty Polyurethane Screeds are ideal for both wet and dry processing environments, in Industries such as Food, Beverage and Chemical, as they are seamless and have a lightly textured matt finish. They have a high chemical resistance, are non-tainting and have a high abrasion resistance and are HACCP Certified. Installed at a nominal 6mm thickness they are suitable for freezer temperatures down to -250C and are resistant to spillages and discharges up to 800C. Installed at 9mm thickness they are suitable for freezer temperatures down to -400C and are resistant to spillages and discharges up to 1200C and are fully steam cleanable. All providing it is of a good quality concrete which is essential to install resin systems onto. Heavy Duty Polyurethane Screeds have an anticipated lifespan of approx. 10 – 12 years, with a good housekeeping regime in place.

Coving was installed as required at a 100mm high capped with a birds beak trim and formed using a heavy-duty polyurethane wall render specifically designed for vertical surfaces in Red to match the floors and sealed with a Red solvent free Grout Seal coat. Expansion Joints were reinstated where required using a thixotropic two-part polyurethane modified epoxy high modulus flexible joint filling compound in Red, to blend in with the floor coverings.

ACC Flooring were contacted by the client after the installation to express their gratitude for a job well done, completed within their timed programme, they were impressed with the professionalism of all our operatives on site, and at their willingness to accommodate any request or challenges that cropped up during the installation, and how they conducted themselves in clean and tidy manner throughout the duration of the works.
