Case Study: University of Huddersfield Research Building
Illingworth & Gregory Limited awarded ACC Flooring the resin flooring package for the Railway Research Building project at the University of Huddersfield.
The floor area of 334m² to existing terrazzo tile flooring which were bonded to the substrate was mechanically prepared with diamond grinders. The cement based latex residue required removal with a VonArx floor planer.
There were areas of the substrate which required making good and levelling. ACC Bulk is resin rich granite reinforced trowel applied polyurethane repair mortar for use as an underlayment or infill on concrete and polymer modified cementitious screeds and to form falls or ramps prior to the system application. It is applied at thicknesses of 10 – 60mm. ACC Maintain Floor Repair is a low odour trowel applied polyurethane concrete benefiting from good chemical resistance, high abrasion and impact resistance and is applied at 5 -10mm thickness.
The expansion joints were marked and diamond saw cut and some were infilled with ACC Maintain Joint Repair which is low odour polyurethane concrete designed to repair concrete floor slabs. Unlike epoxy compounds ACC Maintain Joint Repair will cure at temperatures below 5°C. The product benefits from good chemical resistance and impact resistance. It also has a similar consistency as cement based mortar and can be trowelled to a closed finish.
Anchor grooves were cut into the substrate including the terrazzo floor tiles to increase bonding properties. Altro Prime was applied to the prepared substrate included to some areas which required additional fibreglass protection. Altro Prime is an epoxy based solvent free, low viscosity primer designed to bond Altro resin products to a suitable substrate.
Altro Crete heavy duty polyurethane screed in Steel was trowel applied at 6mm throughout. Altro Crete offers excellent resistance to aggressive chemicals, is seamless and impervious with enhanced hygiene characteristics, with a profiled slip resistance and a life expectancy of a minimum of 15 years, Altro Crete provides the durability required in a demanding environment. A coat of high build epoxy coating in Mid Grey was installed to act as an easy clean seal coat.
The remaining expansion joints were diamond saw cut and infilled with Altro Expand, a low odour chemical resistant joint sealant.
Altro Line high gloss solvent free high build epoxy line marking system in Black and Safety Yellow was applied to define areas and spaces.
The installation was completed in a 5 day window to the agreed time frame allowing the area to be trafficked after 24 hours cure time.
