Case Study: Fire & Rescue HQ – Transport Workshop

After lengthy discussions, we were appointed as the flooring contractor for Marshall (Building Contractors) Ltd. The project was to install an epoxy coating to their car workshop areas at West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Authority Headquarters in Birkenshaw.

The project comprised of a main area where the appliances are serviced and two small workshop floors with lathes and other small mechanical fixed plant and equipment.

All the areas had been coated many years ago with an epoxy coating which had worn very well but was now starting to look tired. Several product options were discussed with the client choosing Altro Tect slip resistant, high build epoxy coating in Patina from Altro Resins. The client has a long standing relationship with Altro and with a 3 year warranty together with a 7 year life expectancy they felt that this product option gave them the best life cycle costs and return.

The programme of works was meticulously planned by the main contractor & client who had arranged for all the appliances to be sent out to fire stations around the county leaving the site clear for a 5 day period before Christmas to carry out the work.

“The job that was planned in this week to renew the floor covering to the transport workshop was organised and supervised really well with no issues or concerns raised during the work, we are really pleased with the finished product which has been completed to a high standard.

Please pass on my thanks and WYFRS thanks to the operatives that completed this work to a high standard on your behalf.”

Simon McCartney, Deputy Property Manager,
West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Authority

The 910m² floor area was shotblasted and diamond edge ground to remove any laitance and providing a clean, sound substrate to receive a resin floor finish. 9No. gulley pots were infilled with a fast cure concrete at the clients request. The expansion joints were racked out and infilled with a low odour polyurethane concrete which has been specifically designed to repair joint arises in concrete floor slabs. This product is rubber modified and provides excellent physical properties in terms of impact resistance and durability and it will withstand continuous wear from fork lift trucks and wheeled vehicles. Unlike epoxy compounds, it will cure at temperatures below 5°C.

2 coats of Altro Tect slip resistant which is a low odour high build epoxy coating were then installed throughout. With a PTV of ≥36, it will provide a non-slip surface which will help prevent trips and falls. Available in 27 standard colours and with the advantages of a fully sealed surface, good chemical resistance and good abrasion resistance in a high gloss finish with an ease of cleaning, this product offered the client the perfect solution.

Installed in 3 working days, both the client and main contractor were delighted with the quality of workmanship.
